Editorial : From Library Journal This book, written by four members of the Families of the Mentally Ill Collective with the aid of three professionals who advocate a family-centered psychoeducational approach to schizophrenia, is both a consumer's manual for those affected by a relative's schizophrenia and a plea for more research and for public compassion. The many fascinating vignettes by parents and siblings of schizophrenics show compellingly what life is like with a schizophrenic, the stress of initial commitment to a hospital, and the apprehensions a family experiences when it needs but does not trust professional assistance. A moving book whose stated grievance with deinstitutionalization and recent patients' rights laws is controversial. For subject collections. William Abrams, Portland State Univ.
