"When America declared war in 1917, I was a few months past eighteen years of age and just finishing my first year in college. By the time I was to reenter in the fall for the second year, war activities were under way on a large scale. Men were going into some branch of the service on all sides. I felt that my family should do their bit in uniform, and my age designated me as the most appropriate one." This Texas A&M College student was Carl Andrew Brannen; these are his memoirs of a time when boys became men and your country became your life.Over There: A Marine in the Great War takes the reader on an almost two-year journey through his world as a young soldier in the war. Based on Brannen's memoirs recorded in the 1930s and photographs he took with a German camera as a soldier, this book describes day-to-day obstacles he and his fellow soldiers faced during Marine Corps training, movement to France, and mortal combat."As I jumped for protection into a ditch nearby, a fusillad
Editorial : From Publishers Weekly The late Brannen left Texas A&M in January 1918 to join the U.S. Marines; fight in France at Belleau Wood, St. Mihiel and Soissons; and participate in the occupation of Germany. His battlefield snapshots combine with outstanding annotations by Hillman and Owen to enhance this first-rate front-line memoir, recording his memories of training and combat in the 1930s. Unlike many retrospective works on war, this one does not embellish its author's memories. Brannen matter-of-factly recounts his participation in the front lines of a war that substituted flesh for steel. The marines moved by marching and fought with rifles, grenades and light machine guns. Tactical skill and sheer courage were used where, in later eras, there would be elaborate combined-arms fire-support programs. Brannen's regiment, the 6th Marines, was out and completely replaced almost twice between June and November 1918?a useful reminder of war's ultimate price. The author died in 1978. Annotators
It is bascially a fact type book. Others may take a bit of practice, but are do-able. Having been educated in Cuba, Fontova points out that Canek sees this as evidence of Castro's betrayal of the ideas of the revolution. There is occasional material that strikes me as UPG (unverified personal gnosis), which some may see as a red flag, but also makes it more unique than many encyclopedias. Well, after how many years of being a drummer, I've looked for drums instructional books that would revive me out of rhythm death. Immediately upon graduation, he was shipped overseas to France to join the American Expeditionary Force under Gen John Pershing's command. The younger waitress, Miu, has a crush on one of the regular customers, a boy who comes in to study his advanced math books. Germanus. But it's okay because KATIE AND ANDY! SO CUTE!
Seriously, I adored Andy's perceived awkwardness that ended up winning Katie over because he was so invested in her as a person. I assume novella
